The main issue surrounding the Cane Corso Italiano is their origin and purity here in the states. Well here is the deal about what most are overlooking with this whole crazy political debate, that is the quality of breeders. Truth is yeah im sure mixing of other breeds is going on with the Corso here in the states, but guess what it happens across seas as well! Everyone seems to think just because a dog is from Europe they got themselves a quality dog, like Europeans are incapable of being unethical breeders, or cross breeding. Not only are they just as capable as the back yard breeders of the good old USA, but money hungry just the same. I have first hand knowledge of false stud paperwork, comments of sending their so called "junk dogs" to the Americans seeking "Show/Breed Quality." Now correct me if im wrong but does this not only worsen our problem of quality dogs in here America?
Now it is true I do personally seek the FCI Corso Standard and type over the ICCF American Corso Standard and type, however this does not mean I believe these not to be Corso. If you have done any research at all you would have noticed most American dogs appear to be more of a neo/rottie influence, where as the european dogs seem to be more of a boxer/neo influence. Now please do not assume that im saying that is what every "Corso" is or has a mix of, this is just my way to describe the difference in appearance. American Corsi are larger in overall size. European Corsi are smaller in overall size. Yes there are LARGE and SMALL examples of this breed on both sides of the ocean as well.
It boils down to personal taste. Because what their is a demand for is what most breeders will breed, while others will breed their IDEAL Cane Corso no matter the cost. American Breeders are no better nor worse than European Breeders and vice versa. I know of a many many breeders in the USA and Europe that I have come to learn and know over the many years I have been overcome by this breed. Truth be told I would only consider a handful to purchase my own stock from and suggest/refer to anyone in search of a healthy new addition to their family.
I don't play favorites or take sides, I am simply just in the market for Quality! Quality means everything, healthy, sound in mind, physically capable to perform, and the drive to please.
So in conclusion the purpose of this page is to let the novice know the important thing is getting what you want in a companion. Be sure your supporting ONLY an ethical breeder that does the following:
Provides you with Hip and Elbow evaluations on all breeding stock at your request! Anyone can say they have them, be sure to trust only those that can physically provide them!
Breeds Mature stock. 2 years of age and older. Anything younger than this cannot be properly evaluated for hips, health, etc.
Can tell you the reasons for each breeding and the flaws of each paring and past litters. There is no such thing as a perfect litter and an honest breeder will be able to inform you of the flaws in their stock. If they do not know how can they provide you with a Show or Pet Prospect.
Answers all of your questions thoroughly without being defensive. But keep in mind many ethical breeders to stay busy and may take a bit of time to reply, but they will answer your questions even if your not looking for a pup right away. Be cautions of those that only care to answer when your closer to the date of picking a pup.
At least a 2 yr but preferable a lifetime health Guarantee against crippling defects. A breeder that offers no health Guarantee at all is either giving FREE puppies away or a Heartless Unethical breeding IDIOT that doesn't deserve the company of such fine animals or your hard earned money.
Proper accommodations for their breeding stock. This includes proper nutrition, living quarters, stimulating activities, (such as protection work, therapy work, scent tracking, basic obedience, weight pull) daily human interaction. Being kenneled or chained up all day long does not constitute as commendable quality of life.
Speaks knowledgeable of the breed. Now this is common sense but anyone that cannot give you the correct history of this breed or say the name correctly should be labeled as SUSPECT BREEDER.
Provides you with a contact list of past puppy buyers. This of course applies to breeders that have produced a litter. Those that cannot provide you with a list - 1) dont really care about the puppies they produce and are in it for the money(unethical) or 2) have many pissed off puppy homes they have let down, lied to or robbed.(unethical)
Pick your breeder wisely and be smart about spending your hard earn money. In the end its always the pup and innocent families that suffer the most at the hands of unethical breeders.
